John was born in 1800 in
Edgefield district,, South Carolina. He married
Ann H. Gillespie. ....After John's death, Ann married James Hamill (1849) with whom she had one child (Henretta)..... John died on 25 December 1847 in
Winston County,, Mississippi. Obiturary: SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, dated 31 March 1848, signed by W.H.Crawford. " Died, in Winston county, Miss, December 25, 1847, John S. Savage. He was born in Edgefield dist.,professed religion at a camp-meeting near Covington in Newton co. Ga., 15 Oct 1831; and has ever since been a worthy and acceptable member of the M.E.Church. His sufferings were great during his sickness (he died of cancer); but he ever evinced that calm resignation of mind which characterizes the humble christian. He was not only thoughtful and interested in the cause of Christ and his own eternal welfare, when he saw the cold hands of death would soon usher him into eternity, but from the time of his profession until his death, he so conducted himself that his walk was a practical comment upon the christian religion. He was an affectionate husband, a kind father, and good citizen. He left a wife and four children to mourn their loss." Original in the Carolinia Library of the University of South Carolina. I have copies of his will & probate records in my files. Also an aerial map with the original Winston county home place marked.
The Methodist Minister (William H. Crawford) who submitted the orbituary to the newspaper was a first cousin to James Anderson Savage's wife. The Reverand Crawford's father Peter Crawford was a brother to Elizabeth "Betty" Shaw Savage's mother Drucilla Crawford Shaw..
John is the fifth person listed on page one of the 1840 census of Winston County. John is most likely buried in Plesant Hill Cemetery, where many family members are buried.
On page 116 of the index of the minute book of the Georgia, DeKalb County. Superior Court is the following entry Term' March 1838, Plaintiff' State, Defendant' John S. Savage Charge' apavet with intent to commit rape-Trubill" I have not been able to date to find anything else concerning this, the Secretery of State list this as "assult with intent ", don't know if apavet and assult are interchangeable terms or not. Later John is found as a J.P. witness to a will in DeKalb County, GA in July 1838.
John is found on the 1830 census of Abbeville County, S.C. Roll 169, page 64. His numbers are males 1-1-0-0-1. This would match James Anderson who would be 5 years old. Edwin age unknown, and John himself who would be 30 years old. Female numbers are 1-0-0-0-1. This would match Eleanor Jane who would be 3 years old and Ann his wife who would be 20 years old. ...Edwin is found in a one time mention by Eleanor Jane in a letter to her aunt where in she talks about the old church where brother Edwin is buried...The letter reads in part "My dear and only aunt, My last recollection of you was when your little girl was buried at the old church where mother and father held their membership and where brother Edwin was buried." ...
