Jack was born on 6 August 1927. He was the son of
Claude Evans Russell and
Carrie Elizabeth Unger. He married
Margaret Nell Feltner on 25 May 1949.
Jack attended Ole Miss on a football scholarship initially, but was drafted for Korean War service. When he returned to school after his tour of duty, he elected to use his G.I.Bill benefits and forego football. After he and Margaret were married, I ate supper with them most nights. This was their contribution toward my education. I was on the bare bones program. Jack and I hitch hiked to Cadiz, Kentucky for the wedding. They were married in the First BAptist Church of Cadiz by the Rev. Shirley Spahr. Jack Hazard was the best man. Myself, Don Simmons and John Bruce (all from West Point, Miss.) served as ushers. Jack took his degree in mathamatics..then pursued higher degrees at the University of Illionis at Urbana. Margaret was a music teacher. She was the band director in West Point, Miss. for the 2 years prior to their marriage. Jack became a professor at Southwesten College, Memphis, Tennessee. He died as a result of liver cancer. Jack was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa honor societies.
