From ‘Hometown Mississppi” 2nd edition by James F. Brieger
“Savage, seven miles southwest of Arkabutla came into existence in 1900
when the Y & M V Railroad (my note: Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad)
came through this section. The town never grew to any size, the main reason
probably being that in its early years it was struck three times by
tornadies, several lives were lost in these storms and the place is often
referred to as Storm Town.”
~From the WPA History of the county project: (Cira 1936)
Savage is located twenty miles northwest of Senatobia on the Y.& M.V.
Railroad. This is a typical Mississippi village with several stores, a
cotton gin and gristmill. Farming is the cheif occupation of the section
and fine crops are produced during a normal season, for this is in the rich
Big Black River section. During a wet season, however, often the town is
inundated.
Savage came into existence during the year 1900, when the Y.& M.V.Railroad came through that section. The town has not grown very much for it has been the victum of three torandoes in which several lives were lost, and often referred to as the “Storm Town”
